Are There Loyalty Programmes That Save Money on Fuel?

Several UK fuel brands offer loyalty schemes, but are they actually worth using? Here is an honest look at the major programmes.

Nectar (Esso)

Esso stations participate in the Nectar loyalty scheme. You earn Nectar points on every fill-up, which can be redeemed at Sainsbury's and other partners. The earn rate is modest, but if you shop at Sainsbury's regularly, it adds up over time.

Tesco Clubcard

Tesco fuel stations let you earn Clubcard points on fuel purchases. Points can be redeemed for money off shopping or converted into partner rewards. Tesco also occasionally runs Clubcard Price promotions on fuel.

BPme Rewards

BP's BPme app offers rewards on fuel purchases at BP stations. You earn points that can be converted into money off future fuel or used at M&S Food in BP shops.

Do Loyalty Schemes Beat a Cheaper Station?

Here is the important point: loyalty points are worth typically 0.5–1p per litre. If another station is 3–4p per litre cheaper, the loyalty scheme is not making up the difference. Always compare the pump price first using Stafford Fuel Prices, then factor in loyalty benefits as a bonus.

The Best Strategy

Use loyalty cards at your preferred station, but do not let them override the actual price. If two stations are similarly priced, go to the one where you earn points. If one is significantly cheaper, go there regardless of loyalty programmes.
